Cows guts used as tennis strings

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have some guts!

Sure it was a great final but like most of the general public watching the French Open the other day I had no idea that the players' could be using cows intestines as the strings.

Animal rights groups are likely to make a racket after this story appeared on the BBC, showing all little-known uses for animal parts.

Some of the more amusing ones;

Hooves – used in fire fighting foam

Horns – to make buttons

Sperm whale squid vomit – used in several high-end perfumes

Sheep placenta – can be a facial beauty treatment

Fish bladder – used as fining agent for some beers

If you are a keen believer of what you don't know can't hurt you – then don't click here.

The five part-series Kill It, Cut It, Use It, starts on Monday 13 June at 2100 BST on BBC3.
